Arab Youth Leaders to Address 18th Annual National Service-Learning Conference

Thousands to attend event March 28-31 in Albuquerque, New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Later this month, this city will play host to the largest gathering of educators, youth and policymakers involved in leadership and service to community. The 18th Annual Service-Learning Conference: Beyond Borders, Beyond Boundaries, will be held March 28-31, 2007 at the Albuquerque Convention Center, featuring national and international experts, and an estimated 3,000 participants from around the world expected to attend.

Education Development Center (EDC), an international nonprofit research organization and the Kuwait-based, Jusoor Arabiya, a leadership and consultancy center, are partnering to host young leaders from Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates who will participate in the conference. These youth leaders will serve on a panel with the theme “Youth Leadership in the Arab World Post 9/11” and will share their values, aspirations and accomplishments, as they relate to leadership and learning.

“We’re excited to work with Jusoor Arabiya to bring these smart and talented young people to New Mexico to address this conference,” said EDC’s Paul Sully. They are eager to present a picture of life for young people in the Arab world and at the same time discover new approaches to learning while here in the U.S.,” he said.

The young leaders who will address the New Mexico conference include:

Mr. Tareq Al-Rabei (Kuwait)
Ms. Fajer Alawadhi (Kuwait)
Mr. Dhari Al-Jutaili (Kuwait)
Ms. Hala Al-Eisa (Kuwait)
Ms. Reem Al-Hashimy (United Arab Emirates)
Ms. Nariman Al-Rostamani (United Arab Emirates)

Moderating the panel will be Hisham Jabi, Chief of Party for the Ruwwad Youth Volunteers for Community Assistance Program in the West Bank and Gaza, a project of EDC. Haneen Ghabra, Communication and Business Development Director at Jusoor Arabiya, is co-organizer of the panel.

Following the conference and other meetings in the U.S., these young people will return to their home countries to help launch a three-year Arab Young Leaders Program with technical guidance from EDC and Jusoor. They will be expected to utilize their new knowledge through trainings and assistance for youth-focused activities in their home countries.

“This is part of our mission of creating bridges between East and West,” said Shafeeq Al-Ghabra, President of Jusoor Arabiya. “This time our focus is on youth in both worlds as they will define how we move forward together,” he said.

The 18th Annual National Service-Learning Conference© is a program of the National Youth Leadership Council hosted by the New Mexico Commission for Community Volunteerism, and sponsored by the State Farm Companies Foundation in partnership with Youth Service America.
