1. Bullying in Middle Schools: New EDC Curriculum Blends Literacy and Health Expertise

A team of EDC experts in health education and adolescent literacy worked together to produce the middle grades curriculum, Taking Action to Stop Bullying: A Literacy-Based Curriculum Module. Sponsored by the MetLife Foundation and aimed at 5th through 8th grade English language arts classrooms, the curriculum unites two streams of research and development at EDC-adolescent literacy programs aimed at building discourse-rich classrooms and skills-based health education.

2. Reducing Child Labor: Community learning centers in Tanzania reach out to child workers

Poverty and a failing education system have driven a large number of Tanzania's children into the labor market, where they work long hours for little pay in very dangerous conditions. If high quality education were made available, many more children would attend and fewer would enter the labor force. In response, EDC and Research Triangle Institute (RTI), are establishing community learning centers in the 11 Tanzanian districts that have the highest incidence of child labor.

3. Schools Report on Success with Impact Mathematics: Educators Report Improvements in Test Scores, Student Engagement (4/04)

Impact Mathematics, developed by Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Education and EDC, is a comprehensive, standards-based program that takes a developmental approach to teaching algebra over the three years of middle school. A new report issued by McGraw-Hill Education, Results with Impact Mathematics, documents the success that eight schools across the country have had with the curriculum. The report includes quotes from educators about the changes they've seen since they implemented Impact, as well as test score data demonstrating marked improvements in student performance.

4. Preventing Campus Drinking and Driving: New Publication Details Successful 'Town-Gown' Strategies

The U.S. Department of Education's Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention, housed at EDC, has published Safe Lanes on Campus: A Guide for Preventing Impaired Driving and Underage Drinking. The guide which is available online, in print, and on CD, reviews and analyzes prevention strategies and details ways colleges and communities can team up to create campus and community environments that discourage alcohol problems.

5. Educational Media in India: EDC opens new digital studios in Bangalore to provide digital editing suites for local producers to create educational materials for primary schools

In December 2003, EDC and the Government of Karnataka, India, inaugurated a new media production studio in Bangalore. The state-of-the-art studio will provide digital editing suites for local producers to create educational materials for primary schools across the Indian state of Karnataka.

6. College Tobacco Prevention: New EDC Web site separates fact from fiction about smoking on campus

The College Tobacco Prevention Resource is web site that offers practical information, ideas, and guidance to college administrators involved with tobacco prevention. The site contains facts about college tobacco use, strategies for comprehensive tobacco prevention, recommended steps for taking action on campus, case studies, glossary and links, and frequently asked questions.

7. Featured Web Tour: Teaching History in the 21st Century

EDC has created a number of innovative tools to bring historical research to life and actively engage students in its study. Many of these resources guide students through hands-on exploration and analysis of historical artifacts and primary source materials-such as journals, photographs, and original documents preserved in online archives. EDC projects also draw connections between history, language arts, science, mathematics, and other subjects.
