1. Educating Homeless Children: EDC Helps New England States

"Any time you think you've got a rule, forget about it," says Paul Cirioni, Massachusetts coordinator of homeless education. Recognizing that each situation is unique, EDC is finding ways to assist Cirioni and other New England state coordinators who work to ensure adequate schooling for the nation's estimated 1 million homeless children. 2. Integrating Medical Ethics Throughout the Veteran's Health Administration

In health care institutions throughout the United States, ethical dilemmas often leave health care workers overwhelmed and confused about which care protocol to follow. To infuse a clear and consistent process for ethical decision-making, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), with help from EDC, is incorporating an "integrated ethics program" throughout the VHA, the largest health care system in the nation.

3. Youth Employment Summit (YES) Celebrates First Anniversary -- YES Networks Active in 60 Countries

Since the international Youth Employment Summit was held in Alexandria, Egypt, last September, young people have responded, launching hundreds of projects in dozens of countries. This December, YES leaders gather in Hyderabad, India, to continue their work to create employment opportunities for young people around the world.

4. Online Genetics: Students Explore Genetics Simulations Through Interactive

Web Site EDC's new Web site "Enlivening Genetics Education" lets students tinker with a family's inherited traits or conduct DNA analyses on blood samples collected from a crime scene. This interactive Web site is designed to complement traditional science curricula.

5. EDC to Test "Draft:Builder" in Schools: New Writing Software is Designed for Students With Disabilities

Writing assignments present challenges for many students, but for a child with a learning disability, writing can be a painstaking and difficult process. That's what led EDC researchers to develop "Draft:Builder," a software tool designed to assist students with organizing their thoughts, taking notes, and creating a draft outline. "Draft:Builder" has been created, adapted, and fine-tuned over many years and it's about to be tested by students in New Jersey.

6. Botswana HIV/AIDS Prevention in Schools: African Nation Revamps Its Approach in Partnership with EDC

Researchers from EDC's Health and Human Development Programs have joined with colleagues in Botswana to develop prevention education and materials, along with a national strategy to address HIV/AIDS through schools.
