1. First Lady Laura Bush Lauds EDC Projects in Ghana and Haiti

Only 25 percent of Ghana’s students can read at grade level after six years of primary education. Working with teachers and administrators, EDC is improving school participation and instruction by introducing management reforms, improved teacher training, and more effective instructional methods. First Lady Laura Bush recently visited one of the schools taking part in this initiative.

First Lady Laura Bush saw firsthand what educators are doing throughout the impoverished island nation of Haiti to reduce a 50 percent illiteracy rate. EDC’s IDEJEN program addresses the educational and employment needs of illiterate young people ages 15–24 by providing them with basic education, life skills, and vocational training.

2. EDC South Africa Project Featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show

Oprah Winfrey and Academy Award-winning actress Charlize Theron highlighted the efforts of South African non-profit Mpilonhle to address the problem of HIV in that country. EDC works with Mpilonhle to create materials that educate adolescents about healthy behaviors.

3. Zooming in on Math

See how teachers’ classrooms are transformed through our Focus on Mathematics program. This Boston-based initiative positions educators, administrators, and mathematicians to put rigorous mathematics at the core of their teaching and learning.

4. An Ancient Land Goes Green

In schools and communities across Egypt, environmental education introduces experiential, active-learning methods into the classroom, and engages communities in issues and activities. EDC provides training and materials to implement the program both in and out of the classroom.

5. Preventing Suicide

In the United States, one person dies by suicide every 16 minutes. An online resource created by EDC helps health and community practitioners develop and improve suicide prevention programs and practices.

6. Expanding Online Education

While the number of online professional development programs is growing, very little is known about their effectiveness. EDC is researching the effectiveness of these programs by studying Teachers’ Domain, a program offered by PBS for high school science teachers.

7. Understanding Immigrant Students

EDC’s Costanza Eggers-Piérola has dedicated her career to helping teachers better understand and learn with their bilingual and immigrant students. She discusses ways in which the experiences, beliefs, knowledge, and skills of these students can become the keys to success in school and at work.
