1. Mental Health and the Military

EDC is collaborating with military and community partners to improve mental health services for veterans and active service members, focusing on post-traumatic stress disorder and suicide prevention.

2. Educating Children in a Conflict Zone

The Muslim region of Mindanao in the Philippines has a long history of war, poverty, and inter-clan fighting. As a result, educational indicators there lag behind those in the rest of the country and drop-out rates are high. Hoping to reverse this situation, USAID has funded a public/private alliance among several Filipino and US-based organizations to improve educational opportunities and teacher quality. EDC provides leadership and coordination as these groups overhaul the education sector.

3. Japanese Children Learn About the U.S. Through Picture Books

A new EDC curriculum introduces Japanese primary school students to the culture, history, and geography of the U.S. through picture books. EDC staff are working with Japan’s Iwate University on the lessons, which introduce topics of diversity and tolerance.

4. What Do Mangroves Have To Do with Computers?

A lush mangrove forest with its wealth of tropical plants, animals, and sea organisms, one of the most biodiverse wetland habitats on the planet, thrives just off the coast of Colombia. For children in a local neighborhood, the mangroves are a gateway to discovering ecology—and computer software.

5. Health and Safety in Child Care Programs

For those who work in child care programs, vital questions about health arise every day. Because many child care providers lack the basic health and safety knowledge to answer these questions, EDC is working with state leaders to enhance the quality of child care services.

6. Arab Youth Leaders

EDC and the Kuwait-based, Jusoor Arabiya, a leadership and consultancy center, sponsored a group of young leaders from Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates to appear on a panel entitled “Youth Leadership in the Arab World Post 9/11.” These young leaders shared their values, aspirations, and accomplishments, as they relate to leadership and learning.

7. Documentaries Explore HIV/AIDS Crisis in Thailand

EDC staff in Thailand and film students from Chulalongkorn University have produced three short documentary films that report on factors contributing to the AIDS epidemic, the plight of children orphaned by it, and promising new community-based responses.

The Miami Herald: "Florida students get an education in dating violence," February 25, 2007.
Love Is Not Abuse, a curriculum developed by EDC and Liz Claiborne, is being used by about 30,000 students in 365 schools nationwide, including high schools in Florida.

9. Afterschool Learning: A Closer Look

EDC is continuously researching and developing resources to keep afterschool programs engaging and productive. Our work fosters youth-centered, experiential activities; complements in-school learning; and leads to community engagement and career exploration.
