1. Literacy in Afghanistan: A Virtual Field Trip

At this month’s White House Conference on Global Literacy held in New York, President Bush cited the EDC Women’s Teacher Training Institute in Kabul, describing its work as “kind of this cascading movement of skill so that people can fulfill their compassion, fulfill their dreams about a more literate Afghanistan.” Through this project, EDC is reaching thousands of Afghans in their villages in order to improve literacy, income generation, and local governance.

2. Online Training for Teachers in Nine States

Responding to a shortage of classroom teachers, EDC has teamed up with Alabama Public Television and others to provide K-12 educators in nine states with online professional development. This initiative adapts EDC’s EdTech Leaders Online to meet teacher quality and student learning goals, with a focus on high-needs schools and districts.

3. Educating Child Laborers in Tanzania

Poverty and a failing education system have driven many children in Tanzania into the labor market, where they face long hours, little pay, and dangerous conditions. With funds from the U.S. Department of Labor, EDC used radio to deliver a literacy and life skills curriculum. Its success has convinced the Tanzanian government to adopt the program nationwide.

4. Preparing Youth for 21st Century Careers

The state of Ohio is adopting EDC’s interdisciplinary high school program, Ford Partnership for Advanced Studies (Ford PAS) statewide. Elsewhere, Ford PAS, which helps prepare students for careers in fields such as business, engineering, and technology, will be provided by several Historically Black Colleges and Universities to local high school students.

5. Improving Teaching and Learning in Indonesia

Focusing on Indonesia’s public and private sector primary schools, an EDC project funded by USAID aims to improve the quality of teaching and learning. Goals include moving control of teacher training to the local level, improving early childhood education, school library development, and public-private alliances to strengthen elementary education.

6. Youth Mental Health in California

The National Center for Mental Health Promotion and Youth Violence Prevention at EDC is providing the state of California guidance on mental health initiatives targeting youth. “These recommendations are expected to inform not only California, but the entire country as mental health legislation becomes a hot button topic,” says EDC’s Deborah Haber.

8. New EDC Web Site

EDC’s International Education Systems (IES) Division, which specializes in improving education access and quality in developing countries around the world, has launched its updated Web site. This newly-designed, colorful Web site features EDC projects in dozens of countries, focusing on the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in education and student-centered teaching and learning. The site also offers audio, video, and print resources.
