1. EDC Wins Major Education Research Contract

The U.S. Department of Education announced that EDC, in partnership with WestEd and American Institutes for Research, has been awarded a five-year $38 million contract to lead the Northeast and Islands Regional Education Laboratory (NEIREL). As one of a network of 10 such labs across the country, NEIREL will conduct research on new approaches to improving teaching and learning and disseminate proven approaches to educators and policymakers.

2. Condoleezza Rice Visits EDC Project in Indonesia

Al Ma’Muriyah Madrasah—a school participating in EDC’s Decentralized Basic Education (DBE 2) project in Jakarta, Indonesia— recently hosted a visit from U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The school is one of seven in Jakarta participating in the DBE 2 project, which works to improve the quality of teaching and learning in Indonesia’s public and private sector primary schools.

3. Curriculum Aims to Increase Financial Literacy

EDC's Adult Literacy Media Alliance (ALMA) recently received funding from the NASD Investor Education Foundation to produce a half-hour television program and curriculum designed to increase money management skills and knowledge. The materials, aimed at adults with a 5th to 8th grade reading level, will be broadcast on TV411, ALMA’s Emmy award-winning, nationally broadcast television series.

4. Providing Unbiased News to the Citizens of Sudan

Modeled after BBC World Service, EDC’s Sudan Radio Service (SRS) is the country's first independent and unbiased radio service to broadcast accurate news and information. SRS produces programs on health, agriculture, development issues, current events, and civics. Broadcasts are transmitted daily in English, Arabic, and Juba Arabic, and a different local language each day.

5. Working With Latino Communities: A Q&A with EDC’s Amy Aparicio Clark

Amy Aparicio Clark is dedicated to bridging the distance between families and schools, and finding ways to encourage students to continue their education. She directs PALMS (Postsecondary Access for Latino Middle-Grades Students), a project funded by Lumina Foundation for Education that creates resources for schools and communities that want to develop Latino students' college prospects.

6. High School Science Curriculum Uses Real-Life Stories to Inspire Students

Funded by the National Science Foundation, Foundation Science is a comprehensive curriculum that covers the four science disciplines—physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science—in eight semester-long courses. The curriculum breaks with traditional high school science teaching by using narratives drawn from life to introduce new content, ask fundamental questions, and establish a context for learning more.

7. Promoting Health in Chinese Schools

A recent evaluation of EDC’s Health-Promoting Schools project in China’s Zhejiang Province found many positive changes in school health policies, the physical and psychosocial environment, skills-based health education, and school health and nutrition services.
