EDC Names New President EDC is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Luther S. Luedtke, president of California Lutheran University, as EDC president and CEO. Literacy in Ghana: An Audiovisual Tour EDC’s Education Quality for All (EQUALL) project is designed to radically improve teaching and learning throughout Ghana. EQUALL features “mother tongue literacy” instruction, which teaches children to read and write in their local language before introducing them to English, Ghana’s official language. Promoting Healthy Learning in Germany The connections between health and academic achievement are well documented, with risky behaviors, poor diet, and low levels of physical activity negatively affecting academics and achievement. Working in Germany with the Bertelsmann Foundation and other European organizations, EDC is conducting the Anscub.de project to improve education by attending to the physical, social, and mental health of teachers and students. New Toolkit Focuses on Effective Communications Developed to assist health and education professionals in their communication efforts, EDC’s new online toolkit offers a six-step strategy, using worksheets, PowerPoint presentations, documents, examples, and other resources. EDC on the Benefits and Drawbacks of Online Professional Development EDC’s Barbara Treacy was a featured guest for an online chat hosted by Education Week that offered tips on how to gauge an online course’s value and credibility. Treacy discussed current research on the effectiveness of online learning, issues of accreditation and standards in the field, and ideas for overcoming bias against distance learning. Preventing Tobacco Use among Youth in Uruguay EDC’s innovative program, developed on behalf of the World Health Organization and successfully tested in India, Ghana, and Mexico, is now being adapted for use in Montevideo, Uruguay. Students will gain advocacy, media literacy, and leadership skills. Read more: 7. EDC Web Site Offers Literacy Resources for Middle and High School Teachers To make Web resources more readily available for middle and high school teachers, parents, and students committed to supporting adolescent literacy, EDC designed the Literacy Matters Web site. Topics include teen literature, reading and writing in the content areas, and technology and literacy. Read more: 8. National Endowment for the Humanities Honors an EDC-Developed Web Site EDC’s Picturing Modern America Web site was recently cited as one of the best online resources for education in the humanities.
