1. Actor Tom Hanks Donates 1,000 Radios for Use by EDC Project in Tanzania

A donation from actor Tom Hanks to the Freeplay Foundation will provide EDC’s distance education program in Tanzania with 1,000 radios. The radios will deliver a literacy and life skills curriculum to 15,000 children with little or no access to formal education.

2. Laura Bush Visits EDC Project in Afghanistan

During her recent trip to Afghanistan, First Lady Laura Bush visited the EDC-operated Women’s Teacher Training Institute in Kabul. The institute is part of the USAID-funded Afghanistan Literacy and Community Empowerment Program (LCEP)--an integrated community development initiative that focuses on literacy, building capacity for income generation, and local governance.

3. EDC Works to Achieve Gender Equity in Peru

As part of the Peru CAPTIC project, EDC conducted a series of workshops on gender equity in both the public and private spheres. The workshops introduced participants to the latest research-based practice on equitable classroom strategies and techniques, and how to create and maintain gender-healthy online communities. CAPTIC is designed to bring information and communication technologies (ICTs) to rural Peru to help teachers provide active, student-centered learning as well as opportunities for students and teachers to work and learn together.

4. Mentoring Program Assists Children with Incarcerated Mothers

EDC, in partnership with Aid to Incarcerated Mothers (AIM), is training a cadre of mentors to support children whose mothers are in prison. The project’s goal is to minimize the impact of separation and incarceration on the child, and improve the bonds between imprisoned parents and their children.

5. EDC Project Supports Middle School Improvement Effort

The Martin Luther King Middle School in Monroe, Louisiana faces a number of challenges in becoming academically excellent, responsive to the developmental needs of young adolescents, and socially equitable. To assist in their efforts at improvement, the school contacted EDC’s AIM at Middle-Grades Results project, a comprehensive school reform program that assists middle-grades schools in becoming high-performing learning organizations.

6. Resource Center Helps Teens Discover Careers in Science and Technology

Across the country more than 30 interactive projects are underway, introducing middle school science teachers and students to the wide range of careers available in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Known collectively as the ITest projects, they deliver hands-on, career-oriented projects to teens in after-school settings and teachers in summer institutes. EDC supports the initiative with the ITest Learning Resource Center (LRC).

7. EDC Study Focuses on Dangers to Children in Parked Cars

Many deaths of young children in parked motor vehicles can be prevented, according to a recent EDC study. Such steps as keeping unoccupied cars locked, educating parents, implementing informed child care transportation policies, passing relevant laws, and working with auto and child safety seat manufacturers to build in warnings and other design features are effective, the study says.
