1. New EDC Mathematics Curriculum Bridges "Traditional" and "Reform" Teaching Methods

EDC is developing an elementary school mathematics curriculum that draws on the best of traditional and reform teaching methods. Developers assert that teachers and students should not have to choose between "drill and practice" and "conceptual" math: they need both. The curriculum, Think Math!, introduces core mathematical concepts and makes those concepts concrete with number games and physical representations.

2. EDC Project Approaches Reading as a Lifelong Process

Identifying and sharing successful reading strategies for adolescents lies at the heart of a new series of online graduate courses, offered by EDC's Literacy Matters project. Each week of the course is organized around a set of readings and a series of scenarios or prompts from the course facilitators. Participants respond with postings that summarize their reactions to the readings and offer tips from their own classroom experiences.

3. Online Resource Offers Guidance on Sustaining Programs After Funding Ends

"Leaving a Legacy" is an online resource from EDC that provides guidance on sustaining programs after funding ends. The resource is organized as a "wheel" of information that offers material on strategic planning, evaluation, partnership and collaboration, capacity building, communications and marketing, public policy, financing, and leadership. The "wheel" also features a self assessment tool and profiles grantees and successful models.

4. EDC Literacy Program Reaches Thousands of Adult Learners

EDC's Adult Literacy Media Alliance (ALMA) has created a curriculum that helps adults gain basic reading, writing, math, and life skills. The program is celebrating its tenth anniversary and includes the Emmy award winning, nationally-televised TV411 series, an interactive Web site, print materials, and hands-on kits.

5. Interactive Web Site Uses Fascinating People to Make Science Come Alive for Students

The "Using the History of Science in the Chemistry Classroom" Web site provides high school chemistry and physical science teachers with a resource for teaching scientific exploration and discovery through the stories of human struggle and triumph. The resources are aligned with national teaching standards and are designed to complement any curriculum or text.

6. Featured Web Tour: Traffic Safety

EDC conducts many projects that aim to reduce the risk of motor vehicle-related injury and death. Several initiatives are designed to help hard-to-reach populations including children and non-English speakers.

7. Featured Publication: Connections and Commitments: Reflecting Latino Values in Early Childhood Programs

Designed for educators, this publication provides activities, strategies, and tools to deepen understanding of Latino cultures and improve teaching.
