Responding to HIV/AIDS
HIV/AIDS causes more deaths each year than any other infectious disease. EDC collaborates with partners all over the world to create and disseminate culturally sensitive and science-based prevention strategies. We also conduct research into the effectiveness of our interventions. EDC also works at both the policy and community levels to rebuild educational systems in regions where students and staff have been devastated by HIV/AIDS.
Guide for Educators
In partnership with Education International, the World Health Organization, and teachers across the globe, EDC's Health and Human Development Programs (HHD) developed the guidebook for educators, Teachers' Exercise Book for HIV Prevention. The guide uses active learning activities such as role-playing, brainstorming, and small-group discussions to help teachers build their students’ skills around HIV/AIDS prevention and improve their own communication and advocacy skills.
Prevention Video
VOICES/VOCES is a video-based intervention program designed for African American and Latino audiences. The program has been proven effective in reducing new sexually transmitted disease infections, including HIV/AIDS, and encouraging condom use. EDC created a Web site that describes the research methodology used to develop VOICES/VOCES and explains why the program has been so effective.
Orphans Affected by AIDS
The EDC-Deutsche Bank HIV/AIDS project works with health officials and an NGO in Thailand to address the educational needs of children affected by AIDS. Building on its success in Thailand, the project has been extended to parts of Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam where the number of children orphaned by AIDS is increasing.
School Leaders in the Caribbean
The Caribbean is second only to Sub-Saharan Africa in its prevalence of HIV/AIDS. In partnership with the University of the West Indies, EDC is strengthening the capacity of educators in the region by promoting advocacy and leadership development to address prevention, voluntary counseling and testing, and care and bereavement.
